Chowan Hospital Community Benefits Grants sponsored by University Health Systems and Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust: $30,000
Funds will be allocated to community outreach and child care health training sessions as follows
The Community Outreach Educator will now continue to conduct a public education campaign to increase the amount of children in Chowan and Perquimans Counties covered by health insurance. This will provide services to at-risk families with children birth through age five; parents who are low income, living below the poverty level and children without health insurance coverage will be targeted. Public outreach, print and electronic media will educate and promote awareness of the importance of primary care, well child check-up, age appropriate screenings, and assist parents in their efforts to enroll their children in the Health Check program. Partcipation in Community Health Fairs and Events, will promote education and awareness. And events for the Smart Start Partnership will celebrate the "Week of the Young Child."
The Child Care Health Consultant provides interactive workshops for children in licensed child care facilities on important disease prevention techniques and wellness activities; training sessions for licensed child care facilities; information to parents through connections made at licensed child care facilities in Chowan and Perquimans Counties and on-site technical assistance to child care providers in areas such as sanitation, follow-up on Emergency plans, assistance with correcting violations cited by the Division of Child Development.
The Women's Fund, a component fund of the North Carolina Community Foundation: $3,000
The funds will be used in collaboration with the Parents as Teachers Program funded by Smart Start.
Judge Thomas Watts Memorial Endowment: $1,650
The funds will be used in collaboration with the Child Health Care Program.
Ann L. Sams Endowment Grant: $225
The funds will be used in the Parents as Teachers Program.
Northern Albemarle Unrestricted Endowment: $200
The funds will be used in collaboration with the Parents as Teachers Program.
Quality Initiative Grants were given from Smart Start to:
In Perquimans County to Perquimans Head Start and in Chowan County to C&N Basic Learning Center, M&E Preschool, and Linda's Little Bit of Heaven. These grants helped them upgrade their centers.
