Chowan Hospital Community Benefits Grants sponsored by University Health Systems Foundation:  $30,000

Funds will be allocated to community outreach and child care health training sessions as follows:

The Community Outreach Educator will now continue to conduct a public education campaign to increase the amount of children in Chowan and Perquimans Counties covered by health insurance.  This will provide services to at-risk families with children birth through age five; parents who are low income, living below the poverty level and children without health insurance coverage will be targeted.  Public outreach, print and electronic media will educate and promote awareness of the importance of primary care, well child check-up, age appropriate screenings, and assist parents in their efforts to enroll their children in the Health Check program.  Partcipation in Community Health Fairs and Events, will promote education and awareness.  The planning and execution of the "Week of the Young Child" Children's Festival promoting health and safety education from local community partners will reach a large group of families.

The Child Care Health Consultant provides interactive workshops for children in licensed child care facilities on important disease prevention techniques and wellness activities; training sessions for licensed child care facilities; information to parents through connections made at licensed child care facilities in Chowan and Perquimans Counties and on-site technical assistance to child care providers in areas such as sanitation, follow-up on Emergency plans, assistance with correcting violations cited by the Division of Child Development.

Judge Thomas Watts Memorial Endowment, a component fund of the North Carolina Community Foundation:  $2,000

The funds will be used in collaboration with the Child Health Care Program to provide Healthy Habits for Life interactive workshops with children in the child care facilities.
